The Posh Under 21s were knocked out of the Northants Hillier Senior Cup on Tuesday evening after suffering a 3-1 defeat to Peterborough Sports.
The Peterborough United Under 21s were beaten 3-1 by an experienced Peterborough Sports side in the Northants Hillier Senior Cup on Tuesday evening with David Kamara's effort proving to be a consolation for Ryan Semple's men.
It was a competitive opening to the contest, but the first clear-cut opportunity of the game resulted in the first goal of the night as Mark JONES found the back of the net, firing past Will Blackmore in the Posh goal.
Posh responded well to going behind and caused one or two problems for the hosts with Kamara firing into the side-netting following good approach play.
Peterborough Sports had the opportunity to extend their lead on 40 minutes, but Blackmore produced a fine double stop.
Joe Davies was denied by Elsom in the Turbines goal, but he could do nothing about the equaliser as KAMARA fired into the top corner after the referee played a good advantage following an earlier foul.
Posh went into the break level, but were under pressure immediately at the start of the second half as Jones found himself with a chance at goal for the hosts, but his effort was saved by Blackmore.
The home side did nudge in front moments later as Dan LAWLOR found the back of the net from close-range following a goal-mouth scramble.
Substitute Changunda almost had an instant impact having been fed through by Kamara, but his effort went just wide of the post. Sports added a third on 74 minutes as GOODMAN found the back of the net from inside the box.
Posh searched for a way back into the game and were almost rewarded when Harley Mills' effort from a dead ball situation rattled the left hand post.
Following the game Professional Development Phase Lead Coach Ryan Semple reflected on his side’s performance, but praised the opposition: “We knew what to expect, they put us under a lot of pressure with long balls and we didn't deal with it well enough. We made mistakes and were punished.
"With playing a senior side who play in the National League North, this was a real eye opener for the younger lads, but we also have experience in the team and it has to be a collective effort and we came up short.
Looking forward to the next game away to Barnsley in the PDL, Semple added: “It will be a good game, a tough game. We have played Barnsley many times, they will be aggressive and they will be on the front foot. We will have to be good on the ball, far better than we were tonight and hopefully we can come away with the points.”
