Under 18s Lead Coach Jimmy Unwin took positives from his young side’s efforts against Everton in the Premier League Cup.
The Peterborough United under 18s suffered a 2-0 defeat to Everton in the Premier League Cup on Saturday afternoon and although that defeat means they cannot progress to the next stage of the competition, Lead Coach Jimmy Unwin took positives from the display against the Category One opponents.
Goals from George Morgan and Jacob Beaumont-Clark were enough for Toffees to secure the three points. The Posh under 18s are next in action against Birmingham City on Saturday morning at the idverde Training Ground.
Unwin said: “We started the game quite slowly if I am honest, the first 30 minutes, we struggled to deal with them playing out from the back, but once we worked out the press and the lads got their distances right on a big pitch, we caused them quite a few problems, but we didn’t take those chances and we lacked a bit of a cutting edge in the final third.
“I was reasonably pleased that the lads competed for 75 minutes or so until they scored and we are coming away disappointed that we have been beaten by a good side. I think the lads just need to back themselves a little more, have some self-belief because we built from the back really well and it was just the decision-making in the final third that let us down a little bit.
“On the whole, there were positives, but we wanted to get the result and progress and we didn’t. However, there are so many learning exercises, they did a lot of good in the game, when we got into their defensive third, we created some good situations. The lads have the ability to win games against Category One opponents and they showed that, we had a lot of young players involved and they will benefit from that experience.”
