Young Posh side lose 1-0 in the final group phase fixture of the Bristol Street Motors Trophy to Colchester United.
Peterborough United are through to the knockout stages of the Bristol Street Motors Trophy as group winners despite a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colchester United at the JobServe Community Stadium on Tuesday evening.
In a game of few chances in front of goal, it was Matthew Etherington's men who eventually came on top with the winner just before the break from Brad Ihionvien scoring the only goal of the game.
Posh started brightly with Ryan De Havilland forcing a save from Tom Smith inside the opening five minutes while at the other end, Fynn Talley saved from Chay Cooper.
In a first half largely played in midfield, the U's got the breakthrough when IHIONVIEN slammed home from inside the box as Talley could only punch a cross clear.
Midfielder Jeando Fuchs came through 45 minutes unscathed on his comeback from injury and was replaced at the break by Charlie O'Connell.
Malik Mothersille hit the post from close-range from a left-wing centre from Harley Mills as Posh came close to a leveller while Noah Chilvers stabbed wide at the other end.
David Ajiboye fired over from the edge of the box as Posh pushed for a leveller and they could of got it late on as the ball fell at the feet of Emmanuel Fernandez, but he shovelled his effort wide from close-range.
The draw for the knockout stages of the competition is at 6.30pm on Friday evening, live on Sky Sports.
